Hurricane/Cyclone season usually comes with sailing restrictions from our insurance company, so I make it a point to pick up a new skill or hobby during that time each year. It’s a great way to stay sane when our cruising range shrinks, and our lifestyle slows down. Some of these storm season projects stand the test of time, while others fall by the wayside. Experimenting with sourdough has stuck around! Aside from the occasional $1 baguette (irresistible in the French islands!), we haven’t purchased any baked goods in ages. My starter, affectionately named SabaDOUGH, has adjusted to obscure flours in remote atolls, high temperatures/humidity levels, and a few questionable boat yard refrigerators…

I’ve donated starter to fellow cruisers and local restaurant chefs along the way, and have enjoyed learning more about baking. Here are five of our favorite boat-friendly sourdough recipes you can make with minimal effort and equipment:

  1. Simple Sourdough Focaccia

There’s nothing better than fresh and fluffy focaccia bread! We keep it simple with olive oil and sea salt to use in various meals. It is excellent alongside any dip, as a pizza crust, or a vehicle to consume saucy meatballs… 😂

  1. Sourdough Ciabatta Rolls

These are our go-to sandwiches. They don’t dry out as quickly as a loaf, so we can store them on the counter rather than sacrificing valuable fridge/freezer space.

  1. Sourdough Everything Bagels

These take a bit more effort to proof, shape, boil, and bake, but man, is it worth it. These are so yummy, we’ve been known to eat an entire batch in 48hrs… Shhhh! Don’t judge us!

  1. Sourdough Naan Flatbread

When we’re low on power and want to avoid using the electric oven, I make these flatbreads that are cooked on the stovetop. We love brushing them with garlic butter and dipping them in curry.

  1. Sourdough Thumbprint Cookies

These have never lasted long enough for me to remember to take a photo! I love a sweet treat, and these make a perfect dessert or afternoon pick-me-up with a glass of iced tea. Ray is allergic to chocolate, so I’m always looking for desserts we can share, and this one is a winner.
